چکیده

We have examined the atomic dynamics of the brittle fracture process in amorphous silica using molecular dynamics. Under strain, extensive atomic restructuring occur in the vicinity of voids leading to the formation of 2membered (2-M) silica rings that are much different than the open network structure of the bulk. The sequence of events that lead to the formation of the 2-M rings was characterized by examining the change in local coordination of atoms.

Interaction and coalescence of nanovoids and dynamic fracture in silica glass: multimillion-to-billion atom molecular dynamics simulations

In this review, we present our recent results for atomistic mechanisms of damage nucleation and growth and dynamic fracture in silica glass. These results have been obtained with multimillion-to-billion atom, parallel, molecular dynamics simulations of (1) the interaction and coalescence of nanovoids in amorphous silica subjected to dilatational strain and (2) the nucleation, growth and healing...

Ju l 1 99 8 A molecular - dynamics study of ductile and brittle fracture in model noncrystalline solids

A molecular-dynamics study of ductile and brittle fracture in model noncrystalline solids Abstract Molecular-dynamics simulations of fracture in model amorphous solids are shown to exhibit brittle or ductile behavior depending on small changes in interatomic potential. Yet, simulations of these two model solids under pure shear reveal no significant difference in their ultimate yield stress. To...

Molecular dynamics studies of brittle fracture in vitreous silica: Review and recent progress

The dynamics of brittle fracture in vitreous silica has been a subject of many molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and experiments. A striking similarity between both simulations and experiments is the observation of nanoscale voids that eventually coalesce leading to failure. In this work, we review the above MD simulations and carry out further MD investigations using two variations of classi...

High damage tolerance of electrochemically lithiated silicon

Mechanical degradation and resultant capacity fade in high-capacity electrode materials critically hinder their use in high-performance rechargeable batteries. Despite tremendous efforts devoted to the study of the electro-chemo-mechanical behaviours of high-capacity electrode materials, their fracture properties and mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here we report a nanomechanical study on th...

Hierarchical Silica Nanostructures Inspired by Diatom Algae Yield Superior Deformability, Toughness, and Strength

A universal design paradigm in biology is the use of hierarchies, which is evident in the structure of proteins, cells, tissues, and organisms, as well as outside the material realm in the design of signaling networks in complex organs such as the brain. A fascinating example of a biological structure is that of diatoms, a microscopic mineralized algae that is mainly composed of amorphous silic...
